What is FIRST LEGO League Explore?
The FIRST LEGO League education program with its divisions
- Explore (formerly FIRST LEGO League Junior) and
- Challenge (formerly FIRST LEGO League)
accompanies and inspires students over several years and leaves a lasting, positive influence on their skills in the areas of STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), teamwork, and communication.
FIRST LEGO League Explore was created by an initiative of the American foundation FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and LEGO and has been developed to bring children from six to ten years to the STEM theme. The children will be introduced to the topics by the colorful bricks they already know.
Accompanied by two or more adult coaches, the teams (up to six team members) explore real existing problems such as resources, recycling, energy, or the coexistence of humans and animals. They create a Show Me poster that presents their discovery and their team, and they build a motorized model of LEGO bricks. On the "journey" the children learn to work together in a team and explore the wonders of science and technology. The focus of the project is the FIRST Core Values such as a respectful approach, shared experience, and critical thinking. At the end of each season, the teams meet for an exhibition to present their results, share ideas, and have fun together.

Why the new name?
FIRST LEGO League Explore was until recently called FIRST LEGO League Junior. With the rebranding, a joint educational program is being created: FIRST LEGO League with the divisions FIRST LEGO League Explore (for children from 6 to 10 years of age) and FIRST LEGO League Challenge (for students from 9 to 16 years of age). This illustrates the similarities between the two divisions, which are particularly characterized by core values such as innovation and teamwork. Neither Explore nor Challenge will change in terms of content. The rebranding shows that children and young people will find suitable challenges, exciting tasks, and relevant topics for every age group in the FIRST LEGO League. They can grow in and with the program over many years and strengthen their skills.

FIRST Core Values
The FIRST Core Values are the cornerstone of all of the FIRST programs. They are among the basic elements that distinguish the projects from other programs of this kind. Each FIRST LEGO League Explore team and everyone who is in contact with the teams should understand and respect these Core Values. We express the FIRST philosophies of Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition through the following Core Values:
- Discovery: We explore new skills and ideas.
- Innovation: We use creativity and persistence to solve problems.
- Impact: We apply what we learn to improve our world.
- Inclusion: We respect each other and embrace our differences.
- Teamwork: We are stronger when we work together.
- Fun: We enjoy and celebrate what we do!
